Visiting the Palais des Papes: A Practical Guide to Avignon’s Iconic Palace (2026)

If you are on a journey through France, and near Avignon, France, the Papal Palace (the “Palais des Papes”) is an absolute must and is in fact a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The History of the Papal Palace

Work on the palace grounds began in 1252. It was both a fortress and a palace to 6 Popes through a large part of the 14th century (1309-1376). The popes departed Avignon in 1377, returning to Rome. It remained the property of the Pope until 1791 and was ransacked during the French Revolution. The Palais was subsequently taken over by the Napoleonic French state for use as a military barracks and prison. It was vacated in only 1906, when it became a national museum. It has been under virtually constant restoration ever since.

Why Visit the Palais des Papes?

As the largest Gothic building of the Middle Ages, it is truly magnificent with grand halls, rooms and frescoes. The Pont d’Avignon is a short walk away as are other historic structures from old France.
