Whether you’re planning a cross-country adventure or just a quick weekend, the secret to a great trip lies in the preparation. After years of exploring various routes and logging thousands of miles and kilometres in my own vehicle, I’ve learned that the right gear and a good plan are what turns a “long drive” into an unforgettable journey.

Before you hit the road this vacation season, here is my go-to checklist to ensure your 2026 road trip is safe, stress-free, and fun.

1. Pre-Trip Vehicle Maintenance

Nothing ruins a vacation faster than a mechanical breakdown. Before you leave the driveway, take a few minutes to ensure your car is ready for the long haul.

• Check Your Fluids: Top off your oil, coolant, and windshield washer fluid. If you are close to a scheduled oil change, get it done for smoother driving and better mileage.
• Tire Pressure: Don’t forget to check your tires and the spare! Driving on properly inflated tires improves gas mileage and safety.
• Maintenance Schedule: If you’re approaching a milestone (like my recent 16,000 km service), get it done before you leave. It’s better to have a mechanic look at your car in your own city than on the side of a highway.

2. The Tech & Tools

In 2026, technology is your best friend and co-pilot. Make sure your “digital glovebox” is ready:

• Offline Maps: Service can be spotty in remote areas. Download your route on Google Maps so it’s available even when you’re off the grid. Most cars have GPS but make sure it’s updated (some auto update, some don’t).
• Emergency Kit: Every car should have jumper cables, a portable air compressor (small and inexpensive), a first-aid kit, a flashlight, and a reflective triangle.
• Charging Hub: Bring a multi-port USB charger so you can keep your phone, camera, and tablet powered up simultaneously.

3. Packing Smart

Space is a luxury. If you’re traveling with family or friends, packing efficiently is key:

• The “Easy Access” Bag: Pack a small tote for the front seat with your sunglasses, wallet, hand sanitizer, and snacks. This provides anytime access versus waiting and digging through the trunk at every stop.
• Comfort Essentials: Pack a travel pillow, a lightweight blanket, and noise-canceling headphones for passengers.
• Audio Entertainment: Download your favorite podcasts or audiobooks before you leave home to save on data and ensure uninterrupted listening.

4. The Year 2026 “New Normal”

Travel habits have changed, and flexibility is more important than ever.

• Flexible Accommodations: Whenever possible, book hotels or campsites with flexible cancellation policies.
• Travel Apps: Keep a few apps handy for real-time traffic updates, like Waze or to find the best-rated coffee shops in the small towns you’re passing through.
• Embrace the Spontaneous: Use your map to find one “roadside attraction” you wouldn’t normally stop for – it could end up being the highlight of your trip!
